Use & Care
How to look after your Liforme Mat
We hope your Liforme mat is serving you well!
We want you to be able to use and get the most out of your Liforme mat for as long as possible. So here is how to take care of it!
1 Clean it right
Use a tiny drop of dish soap diluted very heavily with plenty of water, and wipe it gently with a non-abrasive sponge that is damp, but not soaking wet. Alternatively to dish soap you can try a more natural solution of lemon juice or white vinegar, in either case very heavily diluted in lots of water. We recommend you do clean your mat only after about every 5-10 uses. If you regularly practice in sweaty conditions, you may wish to clean your mat more frequently but remember that whilst our planet-friendly Liforme mat materials are remarkably durable for Yoga practice, over-cleaning or using abrasive products will wear out the materials faster. We do not recommend using any chemical mat cleaner sprays or sprays with essential oils, as they can potentially damage the mat.
2 Let it dry
After any practice, especially a sweaty one, and after cleaning, allow your mat to dry fully before you roll it up. Heading straight home from your class? No problem, roll it up, take it home and unroll to dry as soon as you get a chance.
3 Avoid keeping your mat out in the sun for long periods
Your mat is, very importantly, biodegradable and so prolonged exposure to the sun can degrade it more quickly. But don’t worry, our mats are not vampires and they’re OK with the odd bit of sun, so no need to be too worried about this.
4 Store it away
Roll it up with the top side (the coloured side, with the etched design) on the outside between uses. This is important. It’s designed to be rolled this way, and this will help ensure your mat rolls out nice and flat at each time you use if for your practice.
5 Use your mat
Because of the absorbent (and hygienic) materials we use, it is the case that over time and use, your skin’s natural oils may mark or stain the surface of the mat. Try to avoid practising on the mat with freshly applied oily creams or massage oil, etc. as of course these may stain more. The good news is that these sorts of marks will often fade gradually with time or after cleaning. But overall, we say be proud of your mat’s battle scars from all those good warrior poses!
Sometimes, after a lot of use or use in certain conditions, your mats materials may get a bit ‘clogged up’, in which case there are some deeper cleaning methods we may be able to recommend, depending on the circumstances.
Sustainability
Liforme mats are NON-TOXIC and suitable for use in human contact, i.e their intended purpose as a Yoga mat (which involves user contact between their skin and the mat).
Disposal of Liforme mats in landfill is environmentally friendly, as Liforme materials are BIODEGRADABLE. They will break down in typical landfill conditions, within approximately 1-5 years. On decomposition, Liforme materials are non-toxic.
If Liforme’s Polyurethane material is disposed of by burning, the resultant gases will be mostly water vapour and carbon dioxide – relatively un-harmful gases.

Cleaning sprays often contain oils and chemicals that could affect your mat so please avoid using these. For Liforme approved cleaning instructions,se above question.
We strongly recommend avoiding the use of any essential oils, body lotions or moisturiser on your skin immediately prior to using your Liforme mat. As the Liforme mats have an open cell structure on the top surface, it can absorb these oils which could then leave a stain. This will not usually affect the actual use of the mat, but the staining may be hard to get out.
We’ve worked hard to make the Liforme mats biodegradable, so they won’t spend years clogging up a landfill if they’re ever thrown away! This can mean that seriously prolonged exposure to natural sunlight and heat can speed up the degradation process. But our materials are pretty durable, so of course occasional use outside on sunny days is absolutely fine. If you do like to practice outside in the sunshine, we’d recommend storing your Liforme mat in a cool place indoors after your practice.
This is an important one. Once dry, roll up your Liforme Mat with the top (the coloured side, with the etched design) on the outside between uses. It’s designed to be rolled this way (it’s all about the physics of the different thicknesses of the top and bottom layers of the mat!), and this will help ensure your mat rolls out flat each time you use it for your practice. We don’t recommend folding your mat, as this could leave visible creases.
Store it in a cool place indoors away from direct sunlight ready for your next practice.

Our Liforme mats are made to be longer and wider than the average standard size yoga mat, as we know that little bit of extra room can make a big difference!
We don’t yet have an extra-long version of our mat available because most customers do find the Liforme Yoga Mat to be perfectly sufficient in size (we’ve even had professional basketball players using our mats, although to be fair they probably DO need an extra-long version!). This something we are looking at possibly bringing out in the future. If you would be interested in a longer length mat, please get in touch and we will keep you posted on any developments.
We know that many Yogis love using Liforme mats for their heated practice as the extra grippy top surface aids their practice during an intense and sweaty session! However, we do like to just generally caution that our Liforme mats are not specifically designed to be used for hot Yoga. Liforme Mats have an open cell structure on the top surface, meaning moisture is absorbed quickly and can evaporate easily, keeping your mat super grippy and your practice safe and steady, even during an extra sweaty practice.
Liforme mats are also made to be biodegradable, so regular heated yoga practices, or living in a hot and humid climate, could speed up the degradation of the Liforme mat and reduce their lifespan. We still believe your mat will last you a good amount of time even if you practice hot yoga, at least relative to most other mats made from biodegradable materials. We believe it’s super important to use non-toxic biodegradable materials in order to minimise any negative impact on the environment. And we certainly wouldn’t advise anyone to PVC yoga mats even though they can be more durable, as there are a whole host of issues with mats made from PVC. And as a bonus, most people have no need to use a towel on top of a Liforme mat- so you’ll also save energy and water, and avoid detergent and microfiber pollution by not having to wash a sweaty towel after each practice!
The lifespan of the Liforme Mats can depend on several factors such as how often your mat is used, how intense your practice is, how you care for your mat and so on. We’re confident all Liforme Mats will last a good amount of time, and provide great value for our customers!
We have made a conscious decision to produce mats using biodegradable materials and sustainable manufacturing processes, and we focus very much on ‘quality’ over ‘quantity’ of use. We believe that the best mat for a truly Yogic practice is also one that minimises our impact on the environment and our mat, being completely biodegradable, does that. Many other mats do not and will have an ongoing environmental impact long after they have stopped being used.
We know that sustained practice can wear a mat out, in the same way that a pair of running shoes will become worn out, and eventually this will reduce the effectiveness of your mat on your practice. Hence it is not practicable for us to offer a lifetime guarantee or a warranty, but firmly believe we’ve got the best balance of eco-friendliness and durability.
The Liforme Mats are made from our high quality natural rubber base and our specially engineered, proprietary and completely unique eco-polyurethane. Both these materials are fully biodegradable and sustainably produced materials, and we spent over 5 years researching and developing before we launched our first version (and we’ve made a few improvements to our materials in the further 5 years since then)! We’re passionate about working with materials that are eco-friendly and non-toxic, both to humans and our planet.
We recently commissioned an independent study from a leading polymer expert at Imperial College, London in the UK (a global top 10 university with a world class reputation in science) that concludes that our materials are completely non-toxic and that when disposed of at the end of their useful life-cycle, Liforme mats will break down in landfill conditions with an estimated time to near-complete degradation of 1-5 years!
On top of this, the report also examines the issues around toxicity and biodegradability of PVC mats, which is sadly a common material still used by many other Yoga mat brands.
The bottom layer of our mats is made from natural rubber, and natural rubber does contain latex. However, our top surface does not contain latex. We therefore urge caution to any Yogi who suffers from a latex allergy when using the Liforme Mats, and recommend you check with a medical practitioner as to the extent of your allergy and as to whether using a mat with even a rubber base layer could be an issue for you.
