Use & Care
To Clean: For regular mat maintenance and routine cleaning, we recommend wiping your mat down with a damp cloth on a weekly basis. If you have a vigorous practice, or are doing hot yoga, we recommend doing so after each use.
If you’re looking for a deeper clean, we’ve found that washing your mat with a simple solution of 3 parts water: 1 part white vinegar works great! Just wash the entirety of your mat on both sides with the mixture, rinse the mat with hot water at the end to get rid of any vinegar-y smell, and hang or lay flat to dry (do not put your mat in a dryer or leave in direct sunlight, as direct sunlight will damage the natural rubber in your mat). We’ve found it easiest to wash mats in the shower, and then hang them over the shower to dry after cleaning them. You may also use a bath or dish soap, but just be extra careful to fully rinse the soap out to remove any residue to keep the mat from becoming slippery.
The really important thing is to NEVER use alcohol, petroleum based solvents or high concentration essential oils on your mat. Unfortunately these cleaning products adversely impact the natural rubber in our mats, causing it to break down and dry out. Essential oils also may cause your mat to become slippery.
To Store: Do not leave the mat exposed to direct sunlight. If wet, allow the mat to dry before rolling up.
Sustainability
What Jade Care About
Eco-Friendly
First, run by a former lawyer for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, there is no question that making eco-friendly yoga products is our number one priority. Lucky for us, made right, natural rubber is both the most eco-friendly and best performing yoga mat you can get.
We Plant a Tree for Every Mat Sold
Second, we are committed to giving back to the earth with every product sold. We want to leave the earth a better place than when we found it. As Jade mats come from trees, we decided to give back by planting a tree for every mat sold. And since 2006, through our partnership with Trees for the Future, we have done just that, planting over One Million trees so far.
U.S.-based Production
Third, we make our mats in the United States. Given the many new stories we hear about tainted products coming out of China (where almost all other yoga mats are made) as well as working conditions there, this was not a hard decision for us. With U.S. based production, we can be sure of what is going into our mats – as well as how workers are treated. “American made” still means a lot to us. It means we can be assured of compliance with US environmental laws, US consumer safety laws, US worker safety and US wage and hour laws. It also means quality. As a family owned company we do not have to answer to shareholders and can put our customers and our employees ahead of profits. While dollar costs may be lower with mats made in China, it is just not worth it.
Share Yoga with Others
Fourth, through our “Community Partners” program we also try to help out many very special people and organizations trying to bring yoga to those who might benefit from it, but might not otherwise have a chance to try – from schools to prisons and from hospitals to shelters. To find out about some of our partners, click here. To apply for a grant for your organization – perhaps for a single mat for a raffle or auction or for a dozen mats to bring a class to a group in need, click here. JadeYoga encourages everyone to think about what more they might do. Please see our “Supported Causes” page for some ideas.
Dedicated Causes
Fifth, we have some causes and organizations that are very close to us. . For example, every Earth Day a portion of our sales goes to an environmental group our community helps select and on Black Friday and Cyber Monday, we give a portion of our sales to help support abused children. From time to time see us release a special color mats to raise awareness and funds for other causes. For example every fall we release pink and raise money for breast cancer awareness, education, research and support. We also have raised money for autism though our Saffron mats. By far our most popular special color has been teal. $5 from the sale of every Teal mat goes to ovarian cancer causes. In fact, thanks to the support of our customers, we have been able to donate over $100,000 to ovarian cancer research and support.
THE STORY - Jade Yoga Mats
Jade History
The story of JadeYoga really starts over 100 years ago when my grandfather emigrated to the United States in 1904 and began an oriental rug business, Jerrehian Brothers, at the age of 16. He quickly turned this business into one of the most well known and well respected rug dealers in the country by focusing on quality and service.
My father followed my grandfather into the business in the 1960s and founded Jade Industries in 1974 to solve a problem for oriental rug buyers around the world – there were no high quality rug pads to go under fine oriental rugs to provide cushion and prevent them from slipping. The solution to this problem was natural rubber and Jade began making natural rubber rug pads to go under area rugs.
In fact, the birth of JadeYoga really brought yoga mats full circle as one of the first known yoga mats was a rug pad. As the story goes, B.K.S. Iyengar was in the United States doing a demonstration on an oriental rug, but he was slipping – a student took away the rug – leaving the pad and the first yoga mat. Strangely, the yoga mat that became the norm from here was made with cheap, imitation plastic – or PVC. It was also annoyingly slippery – almost useless for most practices and likely toxic.
JadeYoga began in earnest in 2000 after we learned of the fundamental problem with most yoga mats on the market at that time – they were slippery. As we were already making natural rubber rug pads, we approached the problem from that angle and developed Harmony, the first natural rubber yoga mat.
The Beginning
We sent out something like 500 samples and got nearly 300 phone calls – an incredible response. People had never seen anything like it and were thrilled to be able to get a yoga mat that actually gripped. In addition, natural rubber has better cushion and resilience, making it more comfortable. Finally, tapped from rubber trees, natural rubber is a renewable resource and our mats are made in the United States in compliance with U.S. environmental laws and contain no PVCs – making our mats the first “green” and non-toxic yoga mats.
Directly across from my desk today there is a drawing of the oriental rug store my grandfather built. On the wall outside under the name is the business’s slogan “Rugs of Quality”. Just as my grandfather built the oriental rug business on quality and service, we try every day to do the same at JadeYoga. Jade is still a family business – in fact the initials J-A-D-E stand for Jackie (my mom), Amy (my sister), Dean, and Ellen (my other sister). And we are still devoted to quality and service.
Thanks and please let me know if you have any questions about us.
FAQ - Jade Yoga Mats
All of Jade’s eco-friendly yoga mats are made with natural rubber and contain no PVC or other synthetic rubbers. Natural rubber is tapped, like maple syrup, from a rubber tree, a sustainable, renewable resource. We use natural rubber because it grips better and has more cushion than any of the synthetic rubbers on the market (PVC, PER, TPE, EVA). It is also better for the earth as it is made sustainably. In addition to natural rubber, our mats contain both natural and man-made components. The precise components of our mats are proprietary (the last thing we want is someone knocking off our mats). Jade mats contain no PVCs, phthalates, heavy metals or flame retardants. All components are approved by FDA for use in rubber in continuous contact with food.

The natural rubber smell will dissipate over time. The best way to accelerate this process is to air the mat out in a well ventilated area – maybe even in front of a fan – but not in direct sunlight. Because natural rubber has natural variations in smell, and everyone has different sensitivities, the amount of time it takes for the smell to dissipate varies. For most people a week or two is enough, but for some people it may take a couple months (but just like with a car tire or bike tire or anything made of rubber, even then there will be some residual smell.)
For regular mat maintenance and routine cleaning, we recommend wiping your mat down with a damp cloth on a weekly basis. If you have a vigorous practice, or are doing hot yoga, we recommend doing so after each use.

While it has always been our goal to make the best performing yoga mat on the market and we are very proud that Harmony is made with natural rubber, a renewable resource, contains no PVC or ozone depleting substances and is made in the United States in compliance with US environmental laws — we felt we could and should do even more. We looked for a partner to help us give back to the earth and found Trees for the Future to be the right choice. What we like about Trees for the Future is that they work with local communities on projects that are environmentally and economically sustainable. They are not about going in and dictating what they are going to do, doing it and walking away. They engage the local community which leads to a project that can continue long after Trees for the Future has left. Trees for the Future works to develop and implement programs to improve living standards for the participants, by the careful management, rather than the exploitation, of our natural resources. Through this partnership with Trees for the Future, we plant a tree for every yoga mat we sell.
